Grass is the most natural and lowest cost feed for your horse, so it is worth looking after your grazing. Ensuring your horses receive good nutrition from their grazing will also promote good health and vitality. This is achieved by following a year-round management programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Horses are selective grazers and will choose some species over others at different times of the year which encourages exercise, but can leave poached areas that results in weed growth and wasted grazing if left unmanaged. As well as regular removal of droppings, you can prevent this through:-<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Harrowing – Removes any weeds or dead grass and allows sunlight and water into the ground to encourage new roots to grow.<\/li>
  2. Reseeding – Helps bare patches recover, adds diversity, increases the nutritional value and improves pasture production and quality.<\/li>
  3. Rolling – Ensures the ground is level, new grass can become established, and prevents water from collecting in hollows.<\/li>
  4. Topping – Prevents weeds from seeding causing them to exhaust and perish, allowing young growth and creating a durable grass sward.<\/li>
  5. Fertilising – Provides a sustained level of nutrients over a long period to accelerate grass growth that is good quality, which also helps to supress weeds.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
