When he raises his head, the bit is lifted and poll pressure is applied, which prompts him to lower his head and removes the pressure. When fitted and used correctly, a Chambon can help your horse to learn to relax, use his back, and work more freely. However, training sessions should be kept short as it is easy to overdo it and cause back strain. A chambon should also never be ridden in.

Market Harborough

A combination of a static rein that is attached to the bit and a draw rein that looks similar to a martingale. Used under saddle, these have a similar action to the Chambon, whereby pressure is applied as the horse lifts his head to encourage him to lower it. It must be fitted so that the snaffle rein comes into contact before the Market Harborough and so is not restrictive. These should also only be used with a snaffle bit so as to not get conflicting actions.

De Gogue

The De Gogue is a variation of the Chambon but has the benefit of being able to be ridden in too. It places downward pressure on the poll, and backward pressure on the mouth to encourage the horse to bring his head down and in so the pressure is then released. This helps to strengthen the hindquarters, develop the muscles along the back and loins, and creates suppleness. The horse must be worked actively forwards on both reins when in use to ensure the desired result is achieved.

Draw Reins

Draw reins are long reins that pass from the girth, through a snaffle bit and to the rider’s hands to encourage a better frame and head position. They can help to maintain a light contact whilst freely moving forward and carrying himself in a consistent outline. To achieve this, the rider puts pressure on the draw rein, and releases it when the horse produces a rounder frame. However, when used incorrectly draw reins can encourage the horse to lean on the reins and become overbent, resulting in stiffness in the back. For this reason, they should only be used periodically by experienced riders.

Side Reins

Side reins are two reins that attach to the girth and clip onto the bit rings on each side, with buckles to adjust their length. They can be useful for lungeing to provide a contact for the horse to work into, to encourage an inside bend and to help stop him falling out through his outside shoulder. Altering their position on the girth is also a good way to progress training by starting with a deeper frame and gradually increasing collection. However, the horse should always be warmed up without side reins first, and they must be fitted according to the stage of the horse’s training to prevent either a hollow or tense response.

Pessoa

A Pessoa is used with a roller and consists of a series of ropes and pulleys that encourage the horse to bring his hindquarters underneath him, work through his back and take the weight off the forehand when being lunged. If he lifts his head too far, the Pessoa also puts pressure on the mouth to encourage him to lower it. It can be used in four different positions, depending on the horse’s level of training and fitness, to build his muscles and improve collection. Correct fitting is essential to gain most benefit from the Pessoa so as to not restrict his movement, and to ensure engagement.

Shop All Training Aids

Whilst training aids are not a substitute for good riding, they may be beneficial when used correctly.

[3

0":"post-746","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-horse
["GET
