The respiratory tract of a horse is highly specialised to serve one primary function – the exchange of oxygen for carbon dioxide. In order for horses to thrive in every day life, the respiratory system must function properly, but respiratory system disfunction is actually the second leading cause of poor performance in athletic horses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The respiratory system has several important features to help condition the air before delivery to the lungs, as well as defence mechanisms that protect the airways from exposure to dust, irritants, and pathogens:-<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Warming and humidification of air in the nasal passages prevent irritation of the sensitive airways in the lungs<\/li>
  2. The nasal passages are also a first line of defence against larger irritants<\/li>
  3. The trachea has a second defence barrier consisting of hair-like projections and a layer of mucus that trap and remove irritants before they reach the lungs<\/li>
  4. Specialized immune cells protect the respiratory tract in the bronchioles and alveoli<\/li>
  5. Coughing and sneezing also removes irritants and fluid to keep the tissues healthy<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    During winter, cold air can narrow the airways and dry the tissues that line the respiratory tract, resulting in impaired local defences. Increased exposure to allergens, irritants and respiratory infections can also interfere with these defences and compromise respiratory health. These come from environmental factors such as:-<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Stabling conditions and ventilation<\/li>
    2. Quality of bedding and forage<\/li>
    3. Travelling and stress<\/li>
    4. Pollen and dust<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      Although not a replacement for good management practices, feeding a supplement can aid respiratory function in the horse’s modern day environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
