They have teamed up with top nutritionists from leading feed and supplement manufacturers to be able to provide the very best feeding advice and information. BETA say&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;<em>By focusing on good feeding practice and separating fact from fiction, we can help you make more informed choices when it comes to buying your feed and supplements.<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fabulous Fibre<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Horses are designed to eat&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.speedgate.co.uk\/ecomm\/feed-and-bedding\/feed\/hay-and-straw\/hay.htm?categoryType=all&amp;categoryQuery=hay&amp;categoryOffset=0&amp;categoryRequestPath=&amp;rePositionTo=17801&amp;windowPos=247\">fibre<\/a>&nbsp;over any other feed source, so base their ration around this. They should receive at least 1.5% of their body&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.speedgate.co.uk\/ecomm\/stable-yard-and-paddock\/fixtures-and-fittings\/spring-balance.htm?categoryType=all&amp;categoryQuery=weigh&amp;categoryOffset=2&amp;categoryRequestPath=&amp;rePositionTo=20309&amp;windowPos=151\">weight<\/a>&nbsp;in fibre per day. This is essential for gut health &#8211; a lack of, or poor quality fibre can affect the horse&#8217;s ability to utilise its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.speedgate.co.uk\/ecomm\/feed-and-bedding\/feed.htm\">feed<\/a>. If feeding&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.speedgate.co.uk\/ecomm\/feed-and-bedding\/feed\/haylage.htm\">haylage<\/a>, remember it contains a higher water content than&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.speedgate.co.uk\/ecomm\/feed-and-bedding\/feed\/hay-and-straw\/hay.htm?categoryType=all&amp;categoryOffset=0&amp;categoryRequestPath=feed-and-bedding%2Ffeed%2Fhay-and-straw&amp;rePositionTo=17801&amp;windowPos=29\">hay<\/a>, so you must feed more for them to receive the same dry matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fussy Feeders<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If your horse needs tempting to eat their&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.speedgate.co.uk\/ecomm\/feed-and-bedding\/feed.htm\">feed<\/a>, try mixing in a little&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.speedgate.co.uk\/ecomm\/supplements\/multi-vitamins-and-general-purpose\/naf-molasses.htm?categoryType=all&amp;categoryQuery=molasses&amp;categoryOffset=0&amp;categoryRequestPath=&amp;rePositionTo=12752&amp;windowPos=230\">molasses<\/a>&nbsp;to aid palatability. A horse&#8217;s natural diet contains sugar and so they generally prefer a sweeter taste. You could also try chopped&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.speedgate.co.uk\/ecomm\/feed-and-bedding\/feed\/straights\/bag-of-carrots.htm?categoryType=all&amp;categoryQuery=carrots&amp;categoryOffset=0&amp;categoryRequestPath=&amp;rePositionTo=17760&amp;windowPos=243\">carrots<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.speedgate.co.uk\/ecomm\/supplements\/multi-vitamins-and-general-purpose\/naf-mint.htm?categoryType=all&amp;categoryQuery=mint&amp;categoryOffset=0&amp;categoryRequestPath=&amp;rePositionTo=12605&amp;windowPos=226\">mint<\/a>&nbsp;or some&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.speedgate.co.uk\/ecomm\/for-your-horse\/treats-toys-and-licks.htm\">treats.&nbsp;<\/a>Some horses like their feed dampened with warm water, and adding a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.speedgate.co.uk\/ecomm\/feed-and-bedding\/feed\/sugar-and-fibre-beets.htm\">mash<\/a>&nbsp;can help, but try to avoid any sudden changes to their diet as this is associated with an increased risk of colic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Myth Busters<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The following are myths that are commonly heard &#8211;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Haylage is fattening and should be avoided for fizzy or laminitic horses.<\/strong>&nbsp;The nutritional value can be as variable as that of hay. For both, it depends on the quality of the grass and when it was harvested.<\/li><li><strong>Too much protein can lead to excitability<\/strong>. Protein is not a primary energy source, and any excess is excreted in urine.<\/li><li><strong>Some horses are allergic to sugar.<\/strong>&nbsp;Glucose is the primary energy source for the brain, so it is impossible for a horse to be allergic.<\/li><li><strong>Feeds for laminitics must be molasses free.<\/strong>&nbsp;Feeds containing molasses are not automatically high in sugar.
