BETA safety week is returning for a third year to raise awareness of rider safety and highlight the importance of safety equipment. BETA say…

“As the British Equestrian Trade Association, we are passionate about rider safety. We have a wealth of expert knowledge and resources, and feel that now is the perfect time to launch this high-profile campaign at the very start of the competition season.”

BETA promote equipment to be…

A Great Fit

Safety equipment should be professionally fitted and not left to chance. Sharing hats or body protectors, or ‘making do’ with items that are too large or small is not advised. Hidden damage that safety equipment may have sustained is also a good reason to avoid second-hand items. Body protectors must provide good coverage whilst not touching the saddle when mounted, and need to be fitted over thin clothing. Hats must sit firmly on the head and should be snug but without any pressure points.

Fastened Correctly

In order for your garment to keep you as safe as possible you must wear it well. Hats with loose harnesses, flapping chin straps or unfastened body protectors cannot possibly do the job they were designed for. Body protectors with coloured fastenings indicate that it does not fit correctly if on show. They should be secure and reasonably tight to ensure that it remains in place in the event of an accident. Hats with back straps or a dial must be tightly and securely fastened to prevent it tipping forward. The jaw strap should only allow 1 fingers space under your chin, and should sit in a straight line around your face.

Up To Standard

Your riding hats and body protectors should meet the appropriate safety standards for the activity you are involved in. Don’t take any chances! There are a wide range of hat standards available, and each standard shows that the hat has passed rigorous testing and offers appropriate levels of protection. These are reviewed every few years, so you must check that your hat still complies. Body protectors should contain the BETA 2009 or 2018 standards label to show they have met the criteria for shock absorption, body coverage and protection.
