It’s that time of year when a cooler rug can be a useful aid
Exercising your horse particularly in the summer heat will mean they become hot and sweaty, which when left can cause lactic acid build up and subsequently sore muscles, or more seriously heat stress. The cool down process is an important part of your regime for this reason, and using a cooler rug can be a useful aid.
When temperatures are high, it is best to try to avoid riding during the hottest part of the day, and to tailor the intensity of work to the level of heat. If your horse does become sweaty, it is a good idea to sponge him down with water and scrape the excess off to help bring his body temperature back down. Remember, horses also lose electrolytes through sweat which can cause dehydration – ensure you replace them through their feed to keep him on top form.
Once you have sponged him down, a cooler rug can be useful to help speed up drying whilst preventing a chill particularly as evening temperatures begin to drop. Their main function is to wick away moisture to the top of the fabric where it then evaporates which helps the body to gradually cool itself down. Cooler rugs are also useful to keep them at a comfortable temperature whilst travelling – horses have to work to balance themselves which can also cause fatigue and dehydration.
