On Saturday 7th September we will be welcoming bitting expert Hilary Vernon to Speedgate Fawkham for an informative clinic on bits and bitting.
Hilary Vernon from Informed Designs began her career as a freelance instructor before going on to run a training establishment, and then two equestrian retail outlets, all whilst competing her own horses. The experience and knowledge she gained led on to her setting up one of the first bit banks in the UK. Hilary has spent the last 17 years as a full time bitting clinician, travelling across the UK and Europe lecturing and demonstrating the art of bitting.
Hillary says…
“I think finding the right bit for your horse should be a blend of taking the time to seek obedience through correct schooling and the right degree of control, tempered with understanding on the owner’s part of the horse’s mind set, welfare and structural comfort.”
The clinic will consist of a general bitting talk, followed by putting theory into practice with two demonstration horses. Questions and observations from the audience will be encouraged throughout. The talk will cover:
– Considerations before changing the bit
– Conformation of the horses’ mouth
– How conventional bits work
– Understanding resistance
– How to assess the structure of the mouth
– Fitting bits and combination bits
– Selecting the right bit
– How to transition him successfully
The clinic will start at 10am in our Birch Arena and will last approximately 2-3 hours. Tickets are charged at £10 per person and are available to purchase in our Saddleries now. Please note booking in advance is essential.
