Rabbit Winter Care

Help your rabbit survive by adapting their care this winter

Generally rabbits cope with cold weather better than hot weather, but they can die in cold hutches. Rabbits are most comfortable between 10 and 20 degrees so their homes may need to be adapted through winter. Supreme Petfoods provide some tips to keep your rabbits happy and healthy during the cold weather.

Housing

For rabbits that live outdoors, it may be a kinder solution to move them indoors if there is space. However if they must stay outside, placing the hutch in a sheltered location or building and covering it with an insulated hutch cover is a good idea. Remember to maintain good ventilation to avoid respiratory problems, and keep the hutch raised off the ground to prevent damp.

Keeping the hutch clean and dry is essential to ensure your rabbits stay warm. Add some extra bedding and choose one that is absorbent and moisture wicking to keep them warm and cosy, then change it frequently. Ensure that doors are secure to keep predators out, even using a padlock if necessary.

Exercise

Rabbits like to be snuggled up with a companion in winter, but this can cause joints to become stiff, affect skin health and can affect their mental health and wellbeing. They need a clean, dry area where they can run around and stretch their legs – hiding some food around may help get them moving. An attached run with a temporary roof can help to keep mud, water and ice out, but space in a garage or shed may be more suitable. Adding toys at varying heights is also a good way to keep them moving, and changing them on a rota will help to keep them interested.

Diet

Ensuring they receive sufficient fibre is important through winter. Feeding hay alongside a quality concentrate will also ensure that they are consuming the vitamins and minerals that they need. Increasing their feed amounts will also provide additional calories that will give them the energy to stay warm. Keep an eye on their weight and adjust accordingly to make sure they receive enough. Providing fresh greens and clean, unfrozen drinking water is also important through the winter months.

Following these tips will ensure you are meeting their welfare needs and will see you through to warmer days for super happy bunnies!
